La tragedia real de una ratonera bélica, "Black hawk down", y el drama de una familia de clase media sacudida por una tragedia, "In the bedroom", han alcanzado el mayor número de candidaturas en la primera edición de los Premios AFI, que ha lanzado el American Film Institute para competir con el Oscar y los Globos de Oro. Ambos títulos, como la mayoría de los demás nominados, se han estrenan en esta recta final del año, y empatan en cinco categorías, que incluyen mejor película y director. En total, el AFI otorgará el 5 de enero en Los Angeles 12 galardones, que dejan fuera tanto al cine foráneo como al cortometraje o al documental.

Cinco películas han recibido cuatro nominaciones: "A beautiful mind", "El señor de los anillos", "The man who wasn't there", "Mulholland Drive" y "Gosford Park". El director de esta última, Robert Altman, es el único en competir por el galardón de realización sin que su obra haga lo propio como mejor film del año.

La carta a jugar por parte del American Film Institute es adelantarse a la Academia de Hollywood y a la Asociación de la Prensa Extranjera en L.A. y poner en marcha el primer gran evento cinematográfico del año. Un comité de 13 miembros del instituto seleccionaron a los candidatos (cuatro en cada categoría salvo 10 para mejor película) y un centenar integrará el jurado que dará a conocer a los definitivos ganadores.
